Desmond joined Price Waterhouse (now PwC) from Cambridge University in 1970 becoming an audit Partner in 1983 and working mainly with large oil companies. He retired in 2004.

Since retirement he spent nine years as a member of the Financial Reporting Review Panel. He is a Governor of Abbots Hospital in Guildford.
